Last week two teachers, three students and I from the Harjunrinne school were invited to the Youth Climate Summit at the Heureka science centre. The event formed part of the Comenius Project and its ecoaudition. Our school is also a member of the Green Flag system, and it plans to become an "eco" school.
The summit started at 9.00 AM and lasted the whole day.
After a few introductory presentations on climate change, our school group got together to discuss concrete ideas to be implemented at local level. We spent almost the rest of the day to develop our own suggestions. The one that was finally selected was the following: Harjunrinne school should look for different alternatives for renewable energy that could be used in Riihimäki.
In my opinion, however, our approach to climate change should have been on a more global scale. I understand that local solutions are important, but they wont make a big difference unless they are complemented with international agreements. One example could
have been global measures to promote solar energy.
At the end of the day, we still had time to make pancakes, and have a look at the cool exhibitions at Heureka.
